The Awards Contender
Приєднався 24 жов 2021
My name is Brian Rowe, and I'm here to explore the extraordinary world of all things Oscar.
I've been obsessed with the Academy Awards since I was nine years old and watched my hero Steven Spielberg clean house at the 1994 ceremony with his back-to-back masterpieces Jurassic Park and Schindler's List. I started studying the history of the Oscars soon thereafter and have been fascinated by all the winners, nominees, no-shows, and controversies ever since.
I hold a BA in Film Production, MA in English, and MFA in Creative Writing, and what I try to bring to my videos each week is a mix of well-researched analysis and entertaining commentary that bring a new level of insight to you, the viewer.
I post a new video about the Oscars every Tuesday. It doesn't matter if you're an Academy Awards expert or simply interested in cinema, I guarantee you'll find something that interests you.

Μάρτιν ΣΚΟΡΣΙΖΙ 😂😂
What a wonderful video! I absolutely adore her 💗 Other performances that are incredible: 2013 Carrie, 2009 A Single Man, 2007 I'm Not There and 1998 The Big Lebowski. My favourite performance is 1997 Boogie Nights. ✌️💙✨
Add Cher too.. She doesnt deserve the Oscar for Moonstruck... Glenn Close for Fatal Attraction was far better.
10. Jamie Lee Curtis 9. Will Smith 8. Jack Palance 7. Helen Hunt 6. Roberto Benigni 5. Tommy Lee Jones 4. Kim Basinger 3. Al Pacino 2. Gwyneth Paltrow 1. John Wayne
"Sophie's Choice" has become a part of the lexicon. It has come to mean "an incredibly difficult choice between two bad options" and also "an actor's defining role, his/her most important and prestigious work."
Halle Berrys speech is probably the one I go to for a good cry. Great video!
Sh*t! Haha
Like you, i LOVED every messy, complicated, toxic, co-dependent minute of this movie! The cinematography- excellent. IMO, the music made you feel the emotions of the characters versus the actual spoken words. The time jumps like a tennis match (back and forth) The ending - chef's kiss. It's just BRILLIANT. Best movie I've seen in the last few years! 10/10
A great empathetic performance on an emotional rollercoaster, Al Pacino should have gotten it for Dog Day Afternoon, playing a hostage taker robbing a bank so that his boyfriend can afford to get a sex change operation. And that was in the 1970s! Also, Jon Voight creates a really classic cinematic character in Midnight Cowboy.
Julia Roberts should easily be Top 10 for least deserving winner EVER. She is not a great actress to begin with but her winning for a Hallmark Channel level performance in a forgettable movie nobody even watches anymore is ridiculous. Most people now agree that Ellen Burstyn should have easily won for Requiem for a Dream. Requiem remains extremely popular to this day even with younger generations while Erin Brockovich has already been swept into the cinematic dustbin. I'd also throw Reese Witherspoon into the mix. She sucks in Walk the Line and her win, like Roberts' and Paltrow's, screams studio purchase.
I’ve got a few Eva Marie Saint “I’m gonna have the baby right here” Adrien Brody both his winning speech and his presentation the next year with the Binaca. Priceless. I know he’s still cancelled, but Kevin Spacey thanking his mom for driving him to acting class during his acceptance speech for ‘The Usual Suspects’ is lovely. Clark Gable thanking Frank Capra and Claudette Colbert is sweet and gracious. Paul Williams thanking ‘all the little people’ for best song…. There are so many esp. from years past (ie before the 2000’s) that really deserve a look
Denzel Washington should be on list.
Glenn's losing was so unfair. What were they thinking ?!?!
When you get to the 1980’s and you discuss nominations that never happened….. John Mahoney in ‘Say Anything’ had better be on the list. He was heartbreaking, and pompous and endearing. With his expressive face …. NTM, his is the epitome of a supporting role. How he went unrecognized I have no idea.
Jonathan Glazer is the best.
Please do another actor race. Those are my favorites.
“She’s making weird noises” no. Olivia Colman is from Norfolk, that’s just what people from there sound like. (I kid, I kid).
Unpopular opinion (I guess): I love the Movie Django Unchained, I love love love Christoph Waltz, but I didn't get his Oscar Win for Best Supporting Actor in Django Unchained at all. He didn't do a lot in this movie (unlike in Inglorious Basterds as Hans Landa) and I would have much rather preferred Leo diCapri or Samuel L. Jackson to win for their performances in this movie. To me it kind of felt like "He won it for the other Tarantino movie, let him win it again for this one"
Gary Sinese deserved Best Supporting Actor for “Forest Gump”.
Take out Dustin Hoffman, and put in Michelle Yeoh or Ke Huy Quan and you got a good list.
My favorite Oscar speech is probably Forrest Whitaker followed closely by Michelle Yeoh followed by Heath Ledger's family.
Of the performances I've seen: Natalie Portman Frances McDormand Cate Blanchett Julianne Moore (Though I would have given it to Rosamund Pike) Brie Larson Jennifer Lawrence (Though I would have given it to Jessica Chastain) I haven't seen Emma Stone in La La Land, but I'm willing to bet I still would have given the Oscar to Amy Adams in Arrival.
I haven't seen BUtterfield 8 but agreed on Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf. Elizabeth Taylor was phenomenal in that movie, one of the best performances I have ever seen.
IMO, Marlee Maitland’s win for Children of a Lesser God, or Troy Kotsur’s win for Coda would have better captured memorable wins from the deaf community. As they say: Representation matters!!🤟🏽
I don't know if these are the best but definitely the most memorable/iconic, seeing as a lot of them are rather arrogant or infamous (e.g. Sally Field, Julia Roberts calling a respected conductor "stick man", Tom Hanks outting his teacher). Only one I'm shocked isn't here is Matthew Mcconaughey - a truly moving and memorable speech
One of many mysteries and big mistake from the Academy. As everyone got a favourite from her astonishing work, mine has always been about Working Girl. I was young then and enchanted by her Beauty Grace and immense Talent. You did good Girl! Never mind the Oscar. Admiration and love. ❤ 🌹
Oh gosh, these are good takes except for JK Simmons. I've been a teacher for 24 years and never has a movie set teaching back so much as this one. You do not teach through fear and violence. Period. You teach through love, and through respect for your authority. This movie is just wrong about teaching, and damaging to the profession. Sorry!
You don’t need a statue to validate your talent and work. Only people with low self-esteem are into awards. But think about Angela Basset, she didn’t win an Oscar and Hollywood felt so bad they gave her an honorary, is that right? Yet, here you have Glenn in terms of seniority, experience and relevance without an honorary. I think it’s all about race now which is sad.
"i dunno why they seem disinterested"! Drugs my love .
I agree with this list, my all time favorite is Olivia Coleman, I always watch it. Looking forward to see your list of the worst speeches
I think particularly cool that a number of movies really stretched/combined genres like American Beauty, Being John Malkovich and Election between comedy and drama, The Sixth Sense between horror and drama.
Don't like Fight Club or Magnolia but still love 1999, also think it is probably the best year for movies, really a lot of variety, creativity, ambition, passion, daring, but it could also be 1993 or 2004.
